  18. <p>     In what could be the beginning of a long-overdue reckoning
  19. with the crimes of ex-Communists, two Polish secret-police
  20. generals were arrested in Warsaw last week and charged with
  21. "directing" the October 1984 murder of Father Jerzy
  22. Popieluszko, a popular and fervent supporter of the then banned
  23. Solidarity labor union. Though four others have been convicted
  24. in the case, the two generals are the highest-ranking officials
  25. implicated in the killing so far.
  26. </p>
  27. <p>     The government's action came a few days after former
  28. Interior Minister General Miroslaw Milewski, who was the
  29. Politburo member responsible for the state-security police in
  30. 1984, was apprehended on charges of corruption. According to
  31. authorities, Milewski masterminded a network of Polish agents
  32. in Western countries who stole, brought to Poland and then
  33. divvied up valuables and jewelry, plus more than 2,000 troy
  34. ounces of gold valued at $820,000.

  36. <p>     The arrests may have been timed to help Prime Minister
  37. Tadeusz Mazowiecki in his presidential campaign against
  38. Solidarity leader Lech Walesa. Walesa, who announced his bid
  39. for the job four weeks ago, has accused Mazowiecki of lacking
  40. decisiveness in prosecuting ex-Communists.
